(Part 1 of a two-part series)
April is National Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Month, a great time to learn about - or be reminded of - healthy habits that can prevent cancer and how early detection can improve outcomes. The most powerful tools against cancer are prevention and catching potential issues before they advance. First, we'll cover prevention, then watch for the next post in this series that will dive deeper into screenings and detection.
Your Summit Medical Group provider and the advanced technology offered at our four Knoxville-area Summit Diagnostic Imaging Centers and Summit Diagnostic Center in Greeneville, Tennessee, can help you take proactive steps toward a healthier life while providing the needed information to make informed decisions about screenings and results.
Cancer Prevention
According to the American
Cancer Society, about 42% of cancer cases and 45% of cancer deaths in the
United States relate to lifestyle choices, making them potentially avoidable.
Topping the list are smoking, excess body weight, alcohol consumption, UV radiation/sun exposure and physical inactivity. Taking steps to protect your skin, quitting drinking or smoking and adopting a lifestyle with a healthy diet and plenty of movement can go a long way in preventing cancer. Talk to your provider about any concerns and to receive resources and information about smoking cessation, weight loss, diet management and more.
Many types of cancer also are related to genetics, heredity, cell mutations, viruses, occupational hazards and more. That's why it is crucial to stay on schedule for wellness visits, discuss these issues with your provider and get the recommended screenings.
Make a Plan
This April, consider reviewing your habits to see where you can add movement to your day or cut down on sun exposure. Think about your family history and other risk factors - as well as any overdue screenings you know you have - and make a list. Schedule an appointment with your Summit Medical Group provider to review your list and discuss which screenings are right for you.
Let April be the catalyst for a healthier year ahead!
