Electronic Medical Records

What exactly is an Electronic Medical Record?
Historically, healthcare professionals have documented the services they provide to patients utilizing pen and paper.  Today, physicians record that same information electronically using computer technology.  While your physician remains the custodian of your medical record, the information is stored on protected servers.  As a result, your information can be accessed by your physician both from inside, as well as, outside his/her office.

Is my information secure and protected from unauthorized access?

Your information is protected using the most up-to-date security available today.  Summit only provides user name and password access to the Electronic Medical Record to individuals who are authorized healthcare providers.  Whenever one of these individuals accesses your information, that access is recorded electronically.  These measures allow access by authorized users and prohibit access by unauthorized individuals.

How will recording my health information electronically benefit my health?

Access to critical health information is improved in an Electronic Medical Record system.  Whether your Summit physician is delivering top quality care to you in the office, after hours on call, or in the hospital,  he/she is able to securely log into your Electronic Medical Record to view your most current information, thereby enhancing the quality and safety of care delivered.

As a direct result of Electronic Medical Records, the quality of healthcare provided to patients is improved.  Studies have proven that physicians and nurses are more likely to provide the recommended level of care and patients are more likely to see improved control over their conditions when their health information is stored electronically.  Teams of healthcare professionals can also coordinate your care more efficiently utilizing an Electronic Medical Record system.

Electronic Medical Records enhance the safety of healthcare delivered by alerting physicians and nurses to critically important facts about your health.  Whether it is an allergy to a medication or an underlying health condition, healthcare providers are notified immediately of these conditions upon logging into your record.

Unlike traditional paper medical records, the information stored in your Electronic Medical Record is protected in a secured central database.  In the event of a natural disaster, such as the recent flooding or tornados that have devastated parts of Tennessee, your medical information is securely stored, backed up, and ready to be accessed when needed by your healthcare provider.
